Winter pruning
The pruning of 12,000 vines takes place during the winter months and is done by hand. We have several months to carry out the winter pruning, from December to April. The technique used determines the growth and yield of the vine. The pruner decides which branch will become the new fruit-bearing branch for the following season. All other branches are removed.
To get this big job done, we’re organising a series of winter pruning days with volunteers.
These are enjoyable days spent working outdoors, whilst also keeping in mind people’s inner well-being. We provide a light lunch and an evening meal. If it’s freezing, raining or snowing, pruning cannot take place. This is because the plants are vulnerable in such conditions.
