The story of Sofie & Marnix
We, Sofie and Marnix, have been the proud owners and residents of this little paradise since the summer of 2014. Until then, the farm and its 5.5 hectares of land were owned by the Meesters family. Kees Meesters’ grandfather, the previous owner who was born here, built the house in 1914. And Kees’ father, then aged 9, laid the first stone. Together with his wife Hélène, this respectable couple farmed successfully at the Heenwerf for a lifetime. Where the vineyard stands today, there used to be a pear orchard.
How did we, as Belgians, end up in Kruisland? It was pure coincidence. Fate led us to this beautiful spot as if it were meant to be. In our search for a home to buy, we didn’t feel a connection with what was on offer in Belgium. We crossed the border and discovered that we had fewer traffic jams, more natural beauty and peace and quiet. That was exactly what we were looking for.
During our first visit, we happened to meet an elderly couple. They immediately invited us in for a cup of coffee. They were the former owners. A year later, we moved to the Heenwerf. The connection with our neighbours, the local area and the people we happen to meet is truly special.
Both the house and the largest barn, built in 1939, are listed buildings.
Our estate has held the official status of ‘Country Estate’ since 2016. And in order to retain the ‘agricultural designation’ and avoid having to demolish the third barn, we had no choice but to become farmers ourselves! Becoming winegrowers seemed the most appealing option to us! With Marnix’s university background as an agricultural engineer, his business acumen, and Sofie’s commercial and creative personality, combined with our unique energy as a couple, we were fully confident. Our lives took off.
The vineyard was planted in 2016/2017, and at the same time Marnix was trained as a “winegrower-winemaker”. Since then, our passion has grown into a wonderful business, whilst we continue to hold down full-time jobs in Belgium. That is why we are so grateful for the many helping hands of our family, neighbours, friends and acquaintances who enjoy this beautiful place together and help make our dream a reality.
